Project Details

The Malampaya Foundation, Inc. (MFI) is an organisation committed to sustainable social and environmental development in areas where the Malampaya Project operates. One of its key projects is the Bridging Employment through Skills Training (BEST) program, which aims to give unemployed individuals and out-of-school youths from Palawan and Subic the opportunity to learn vocational skills relevant to onshore oil and gas industry.

MFI and Site  worked hand in hand to tailor and deliver a training program which helped develop the candidates’ skills in welding, scaffolding, and rigging. The training, which also incorporates soft skills and basic HSSE awareness, was conducted at the Malampaya HSSE training centre in Site Skills Training Clark.

Challenge
Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX) requires skilled workers for Malampaya project, a large oil and gas project located in the Philippines. The Malampaya Foundation, Inc. saw this as an opportunity to provide assistance to the large pool of out-of-school youth from Palawan and Subic. However, the candidates have little to no experience to cover the skills required by SPEX.
Solution
SPEX approached Malampaya Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with Site and Keppel Corporation, Inc., to fund training as part of the Bridging Employment through Skills Training (BEST) program.
Site Skills Training Philippines delivered basic HSSE, trade and soft skills training to cover the skills required by SPEX in the Keppel Subic Shipyard.
Outcome
Approximately 300 youths from Subic and Palawan were trained with the skills relevant to the SPEX requirements.
Successful graduates were employed by SPEX and contractors, many in fabrication and welding, wherein they were able to earn Php600 daily.
The graduates were able to provide their skills in other businesses in Palawan and Subic, boosting socio-economic development in their local communities.
