Project Details

OceanaGold has partnered with Site to carry out its workforce development program towards the socio-economic growth of communities surrounding its Didipio operation.

The program involves the recruitment of local labourers who will undergo the 3 to 4-month Underground Metalliferous Mine Work Readiness Course in Site Skills Training Clark Philippines. The training is designed around classroom theory and practical exercises that are conducted in the immersive underground mine training environment, which was also built in partnership with OceanaGold.

Training covers Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) awareness, heavy vehicle operation, mine safety operations, and soft skills.

Approximately 35 candidates have already been deployed for training, 25 of them have already graduated and employed in OceanaGold’s Didipio operation.

Challenge
OceanaGold has committed to the socio-economic development of local communities surrounding its Didipio operation through prioritising local labour-hire. However, the pool of skilled labourers available locally is limited. Most of the new recruits require soft skills coaching and familiarisation to underground mine work.
Solution
Site worked diligently with OceanaGold to tailor its Underground Metalliferous Mine Work Readiness course. Competencies offered include services extensions, underground vehicle operations, HSE awareness, and soft skills.
Training was designed around practical exercises within the immersive underground mine environment to refrain the actual worksite from going offline, and for better competency retention—saving cost and increasing productivity.
Training was developed based on OceanaGold’s standards to familiarise candidates on the company’s operating procedures.
Outcome
Approximately 35 candidates have already been deployed for training, 25 of them have graduated and have successfully integrated into OceanaGold’s Didipio operation.
OceanaGold’s workforce development program has become more impactful without requiring the actual mine site to go offline, minimising operational downtime and cost.
